The Roast Chicken
Resembling a roast chicken this type of elongated stalagmite is often referred to as a "Crayback" or "Lobsterback" Stalagmite. They are rare types of cave decoration that mainly grow in large Archway caves such as Abercrombie, Jenolan and Wombeyan Caves.
It is thought that as water drips from a stalactite, air moving through the cave pushes the drip so that it lands down wind of where it would in still conditions. With constanly changing air currents the falling drips create a long thin stalgmite which often resemble the back shell of a lobster, or in this case, a roast chicken.
Because of the massive size of the Abercrombie Archway, it has some of the finest examples of "Craybacks" anywhere in the world.
