Kenneth George GRIMES
Born: 19-10-1944 at Maryborough, Queensland.
Tertiary Education: University of Queensland, 1964-68, 1973-79.
Awarded a B.Sc. degree with honours in geology in 1968.
In 1973 I enrolled in a part time external B.A. course and passed in a number of geographical and computer science subjects.
Professional affiliations:
The Geological Society of Australia,
The Australian Quaternary Association,
The Australian Speleological Federation
Australasian Cave & Karst Management Association
Awards:
Fellow of the Australasian Cave & Karst Management Association, 2009.1991 to present: Consulting work under the business name of Regolith Mapping.
My main projects have been in karst science, interpretation and management. I have also worked in general geomorphology and Cainozoic photogeological mapping. Between 2001 and 2006 I was lecturer for a "distance education" subject (Groundwater in Karst) at Charles Sturt University.
1969 - 1991: Regional Mapping Section, Geological Survey of Queensland (GSQ):
Main activity was in regional geological mapping in Queensland with specialisation in Cainozoic and Mesozoic deposits. This included joint projects with the Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR).
1968 - 1969: Engineering Geology Section, GSQ:
Groundwater resources of the Lockyer Valley, southeast Queensland.
Geological mapping: Mesozoic Carpentaria Basin, and Cainozoic Karumba Basin.
This was a joint BMR/GSQ mapping project. Publications from this project include numerous maps, the final BMR Bulletin (Smart & others, 1980), and papers on the evolution of the Carpentaria Plains (Grimes & Doutch, 1978), and the old landsurfaces of north Queensland (Grimes, 1979).
Queensland Geology, 1:2 500 000 map and publication.
My contribution involved the Cainozoic and Mesozoic parts of the map, and the initial conceptual layout of the schematic reference. The map was printed in 1976 (GSQ., 1976). I wrote the Cainozoic chapter of the accompanying publication (Day & others, 1983).
Cainozoic and Regolith mapping and related studies.
During my preparation of the Queensland Geology map and publication I became familiar with the Cainozoic of the whole state. I was subsequently involved in Cainozoic mapping projects throughout most of Queensland with the exception of the Eromanga Basin area. I became regarded as the regolith expert for the GSQ. In 1978 I presented a "keynote paper" reviewing the Cainozoic Geology of North Queensland at a symposium on the Geology and Geophysics of Northeast Australia, and contributed to the subsequent book (Grimes 1980).
Karst Geomorphology.
While based in Queensland I made several private studies of karst areas (e.g. Grimes, 1983, 1988) and also two karst studies for the Queensland Government (Grimes, 1978, 1990). I was convenor of the Surveying and Mapping Standards Commission of the Australian Speleological Federation from 1982 to 2008, and was Queensland co-ordinator of the Australian Karst Index (a computer database of caves and karst features) for the period 1975-1991.
Since becoming a private consultant, I have contributed to the World Heritage submission on the Nullarbor; provided advice to the Commonwealth Government on the rehabilitation of the karst landforms at a Quarry in Tasmania, and on karst and pseudokarst heritage in general; documented the karst of the south-east of South Australia for the South Australian National Parks and Wildlife Service; chaired an independent review of the status of the Sellicks Hill Quarry Cave for the South Australian Government; and given advice on stability and pollution problems in tourist cave areas and for quarries in cavernous limestone. I was part of a team that studied the hazards and other aspects of the caves and karst of Christmas Island for Parks Australia. I have prepared interpretation signs and notes for several cave, karst and volcanic areas.
More recently I have studied tropical karsts and karren, including the 120+ km Bullita cave system in the Gregory Karst of the Northern Territory, and contributed to a major field study of tropical parakarst and pseudokarst for the Commonwealth Department of Environment and Heritage in 2008 (Grimes & others, 2009).
I have published papers on a variety of karst and pseudokarst topics:
Lecturing.
For several years in the late 1970s and early 1980s I lectured on Karst Geomorphology, Deep Weathering Profiles and Old Land Surfaces to the annual vacation school for the Department of External Studies at Queensland University. This was at the invitation of Dr Denis Saunders. I also lectured on Deep Weathering and Morphostratigraphic Studies to students in the Department of Environmental Studies at Griffith University in 1981, at the invitation of Dr Errol Stocks.
In 2000 I prepared a Distance Education (correspondance) subject Groundwater in Karst for inclusion in a course in Karst Management which was presented by Charles Sturt University from 2001 to 2006.
Map and Report Editing.
From 1979 to 1990 I was involved, both formally and informally, in editing geological maps and reports written by other geologists in the GSQ. I was an examiner of a Ph.D. thesis on laterites in 1988.
Since 1998 I have been co-editor of Helictite, the Journal of Australasian Speleological Research. I have reviewed and edited many karst reports since that time – both for Helictite and other journals.
Outside interests are in bushwalking, caving, photography, drawing, and natural history.
