The Journal of Cave and Karst Studies (ISSN 0146-9517), formerly the Bulletin of the National Speleological Society, is a multi-disciplinary, refereed journal published three times a year by the National Speleological Society, 2813 Cave Avenue, Huntsville, Alabama 35810-4431, USA. The Journal accepts papers covering all aspects of speleology and karstology with the bulk of articles focusing on the Earth and Life Sciences. Beginning with 1996 all abstracts and articles published in the Journal of Cave and Karst Studies may be downloaded as PDFs here. This web address also includes a Guide to Authors and an explanation as to where and how copies of the Journal may be obtained. Abstracts of articles published in the Bulletin of the National Speleological Society prior to 1996 may be downloaded as PDFs here. The main National Speleological Society (NSS) web site, http://www.caves.org, includes many links to specific features available from the NSS and other selected sites.

All papers published in the Journal of Cave and Karst Studies are in English and must be accompanied by an English abstract. Occasionally, a second language abstract is included. All papers accepted for publication are reviewed by at least two experts in the field, by an Associate Editor familiar with the field, and by the Journal Editor (currently a hydrogeologist). On average, manuscripts pass through at least two rounds of review before acceptance. A Journal Advisory Board oversees various aspects of the Journal and advises the Editor on selected issues. Special issues addressing selected themes are published in the Journal of Cave and Karst Studies on an infrequent basis. Past special issues have included Cave and Karst GIS, The Caves of the Guadalupe Mountains Research Symposium, and Kartchner Caverns State Park - Research Symposium. The Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) provides coverage of the Journal of Cave and Karst Studies beginning with Vol.65(1) 2003 in the following areas:

  • 1. Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCIE), including the Web of Science
  • 2. ISI Alerting Services
  • 3. Current Contents Physical, Chemical, and Earth Sciences.

This content distinguishes the Journal of Cave and Karst Studies as the only karst publication currently listed by ISI.
